Herb Erect herb; stems angular; stipules gland-like; leaves alternate, petiolate, ovate or narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic; apex acuminate; base attenuate; flower axillary, sessile, solitary, epigynous; 2 bracteoles outside calyx tube; calyx tube cylindrical somewhat 4-angled, widened apically, approximately 7 mm long; calyx lobes 4, acute, approximately 3 mm long (valvate in bud); calyx not connate into a tube distal to ovary; petals 4, free, elliptic, yellow, easily falling off; stamens 8 (or 9) free, fine hairs between stamens; ovary inferior, style cylindrical¸stigma capitate, wider than style; fruit, when mature, breaking into wedge-shaped corky segments, each containing 1 elliptic seed.
