Grass; sheath present; ligule a short membrane, with hairs on outer side; blade with bulbous-based hairs, mostly on lower surface; margin with very short bristles; inflorescence of 3- 6 , usually 4, digitately arranged spikes; spikelets sessile, secund, arranged in 2 alternating rows on abaxial side of rachis; spikelet laterally flattened with 3 or 4 florets; glume 1 (G1) and glume 2 (G2) equal in size to spikelet, keeled; G2 with short awn; paleas each with 2 wings; lemmas keeled; stamens 3; stigmas 2; fruits rugose, up to 3 per spikelet, G1 persistent in fruit.
