Descriptions : Grass, to 1.2 or more m in height; leaf with sheath and blade; leaf mostly glabrous; ligule a fringe of hairs; inflorescence a panicle, with several branches arising from all sides of one central, upright stem; main branches with many smaller branches with usually 2-several spikelets, sometimes with still smaller branches; smaller branches secund, with spikelets on abaxial side; spikelets pedicelled; pedicels and small branches with short hairs and a few long hairs; spikelets narrowly ovate, compressed dorsally, approximately 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 mm long, with a cup-shaped, red base; glume 1 (G1) not visible (part of base); glume 2 (G2) equal in size to spikelet, hairy outside; lemma 1 (L1) slightly shorter than G1, hairy outside; palea 1 (P1) absent; flower aborted or absent; lemma 2 (L2) and palea 2 (P2) a little hardened.
