Descriptions : Grass Tall grass; sheath on outside with erect, tubercle-based, sharp bristles; ligule membranous with fringe of hairs seemingly adnate to outside of membrane; blade long, tapering: inflorescence spindle-shaped, breaking into cylindrical segments; each segment with 1 pedicelled and 1 sessile spikelet; pedicelled spikelet: spikelet partly fused with rachis; flattened, but rounded outside; glume 1 (G1) against rachis; glume 2 (G2) slightly larger than G1( G1 larger according to Flora of Java); lemma 1 (L1), palea 1 (P1), lemma 2 (L2), palea 2 (P2) membranous; spikelet sterile; sessile spikelet in concavity of rachis; glume 1 (G1) and glume 2 (G2) hardened, G2 boat-shaped; lemma 1 (L1) and palea 1 (P1) papery; flower aborted; lemma 2 (L2) and palea 2 (P2) membranous; flower: ovary with 2 purple, plumose stigmas; stamens 3, yellowish, sometimes tinged with purple; cylindrical segments of inflorescence break free, the distal end hollow, the base with a knob-shaped exension serving as an elaiosome.
